Question 18.
Read the following passage about coffee and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best answer to each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world, enjoyed by millions of people every day. Around the globe, coffee production provides employment for about 25 million farmers and farmworkers and contributes significantly to the economies of many countries. Brazil remains the largest coffee producer, harvesting billions of pounds of coffee each year. Vietnam, Colombia, and Ethiopia are also major producers, exporting millions of tonnes annually. In the United States alone, billions of dollars are spent each year importing coffee, while coffee sales generate even higher profits for businesses.
Despite its popularity and economic importance, coffee farming faces serious challenges due to climate change. Coffee plants are sensitive to temperature, rainfall, and soil conditions. If the climate becomes too hot or too cold, or if rain is insufficient or excessive, coffee plants may fail to produce beans of good quality. Current regions with ideal conditions for coffee growing may no longer be suitable in the coming decades. For example, in Brazil, some areas that now produce top-quality coffee could become unusable by 2050.
Climate change also increases the risk of pests and diseases. The coffee berry borer, a beetle that feeds on coffee beans, thrives in warmer climates. Similarly, coffee rust, a disease that causes coffee trees to lose their ability to produce berries, becomes more common when temperatures rise and rainfall becomes irregular. Farmers and scientists are working to develop more resilient coffee varieties and improve farming techniques to counter these threats, but the future of coffee cultivation remains uncertain.
Coffee continues to be a favorite drink worldwide. Without global action to mitigate climate change, the availability and quality of coffee may decline, affecting millions of people who depend on it for income and enjoyment. Protecting coffee requires collaboration among farmers, governments, and consumers to ensure that this beloved beverage remains part of our daily lives for generations to come.

[I] Landslides are a significant environmental challenge in the northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam, particularly during the rainy season. The region, characterized by steep slopes and heavy rainfall, is prone to this natural disaster, which poses serious threats to both the local population and infrastructure. [II] In recent years, numerous landslides have occurred, often triggered by prolonged periods of heavy rain, resulting in devastating impacts on communities and livelihoods.
The mountainous terrain, combined with deforestation and improper land use, exacerbates the risk of landslides. [III] As farmers clear forests for agriculture, the natural vegetation that stabilizes the soil is lost, making slopes more susceptible to erosion. When heavy rains saturate the soil, it can quickly become unstable, leading to sudden and destructive landslides. [IV]
In response to this growing threat, local authorities and environmental organizations are taking proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with landslides. Efforts include reforestation projects, improving drainage systems, and raising public awareness about safe practices during the rainy season. Additionally, advanced monitoring systems are being implemented to provide early warnings, allowing communities to evacuate before a disaster strikes.
Despite these efforts, the challenges remain significant, and ongoing education and support for sustainable land management practices are crucial for reducing the incidence and impact of landslides in northern Vietnam.
